Work starts on new 36 million litre water storage tank at Wy YungConstruction of a new 36 million litre water storage tank at East Gippsland Water's Wy Yung water storage facility. By Portal Admin - 13th October 2019 - Back to News Site preparation work is about to get underway at East Gippsland Water's Wy Yung water storage facility for the construction of a new 36 million litre water storage tank.
The aim of the project - worth around $15 million - is to maintain the security and reliability of the high quality water supply to some 19,000 customers well into the future. These are customers within the Mitchell River supply system - extending from Bairnsdale through to Paynesville, Lakes Entrance and Nowa Nowa.
The new tank will be constructed from reinforced concrete, with a steel roof. It will be located within the footprint of the existing, disused open storage basin on the corner of Woodward St and Bullumwaal Rd.
East Gippsland Water has appointed contractors Stirloch Constructions to undertake the project, which is expected to be completed in 2021.
[An image of how the water tank (in the foreground) will look on completion]Onsite work from this November will initially involve the creation of two new temporary vehicle access points on Woodward St and Bullumwaal Rd, and the removal of the earth embankments fronting both these roads. This is expected to be completed around March 2020.
Work on construction of the reinforced concrete tank itself is expected to get underway by mid 2020 and be completed by mid 2021 - with landscaping and revegetation of the site carried out.
East Gippsland Water's Executive Manager Capital & Service Delivery, Mark McNeil, said, "Every effort will be made to minimise any impact caused by the construction phase of this essential project on nearby residents. They have been contacted and given an idea of what to expect, including in terms of traffic management and general construction noise, and we greatly appreciate their cooperation".
"The storage facility at Wy Yung has a pivotal role to play in the Mitchell River supply system, which is our largest water supply network, delivering water to more than 80 percent of our customers".
"Our driver is to ensure the long term security and reliability of water supplies to customers, whilst taking into account climate change and forecasted population growth."
