Brumbies & Panthers take the Spoils

Round 2 of Gippsland Rugby League was played at Gaskin Park Churchill last Sunday, in front of a solid crowd

Round 2 of Gippsland Rugby League was played at Gaskin Park Churchill last Sunday and the host team in the Churchill Gladiators took the park for the first time in season 2001, up against the East Gippsland Brumbies. The first 20 minutes of this match was a beauty. With both teams a bit thin on numbers, ball retention was critical and yet both teams seemed over anxious to push the pass, and the resultant turnovers ensured many breaks in play. With both teams exchanging early tries, it was the Gladiators who took the early advantage with back to back tries and open the first break. East Gippsland however looked the ominous side and with numbers on there side, they finished the half full of running, and three unanswered tries saw them go to the break leading 22-10 in an entertaining battle. The battle ended there however as the second half saw one way traffic to East Gippsland. The Gladiators were not aided by the loss of another player early in the half, but the Brumbies took full control of proceedings. Some excellent ball retention kept the Gladiators defending many repeat sets and any wind that may have been left in the sails was soon extinguished. The Brumbies went on a try scoring rampage, led especially well by a well drilled forward pack who were making massive yards up the middle, and when they were not scoring the tries on there own, there hungry backs were mopping up after the good work from the pack.

The Gladiators were at will to prevent the onslaught, and when they managed to get the ball and try to put on some pressure of there own, an early turnover ensured they were defending again. The East lads racked up 44 unanswered points for the half, to cruise home 66-10 winners. The Churchill camp were not overly disappointed with the result. They are in the process of a rebuilding stage and with extra troops ready to take the field this week, one can expect rapid improvement as the weeks roll on.

The second match between Traralgon and Morwell was the Grand Final rematch from last year, but the billing was far from impressive. The reigning Premiers had no less than 4 players in Melbourne representing the Victorian Country Under 18 team, and with some players still getting over some Pre Season match injuries, the Panthers were reduced to the bare 13 players. The Morwell Miners were in a worse predicament. Starting the match with only 10 players, the signs looked ominous. Never the less, the Miners held there own in the first half. With the Panthers refusing to capitalise on the 3 man overlap, and making many errors, the Miners were able to control play by completing there sets in attack whilst managing to scramble furiously in defence against great odds. The tries came eventually for the Panthers who managed 28 first half points, but the gallant Miners managed 14 points of there own which was a huge credit to there character.

The very weary Miners came out of the break and if their situation was bad in the first half, it only got worse. Minutes into the second, they were reduced to 8 players against the 13 Panthers, and a score blowout was on the cards. Two very quick tries to the Panthers began what would seem inevitable – a try scoring blitz with the Morwell line having more holes than players, and they were big holes with only 8 players. Somebody forgot to tell the Miners however and the next 15 minutes saw an amazing turnaround. The Miners, with ball in hand, controlled the tempo of the game, again completing there sets and forcing the errors on a startled Panther outfit. Three unanswered tries to the Miners saw them within 6 points and the totally unthinkable was unfolding. The Panthers eventually answered the call and when it was there turn to attack, the fatigued line of Morwell had few answers left. Three tries to Traralgon saw the game out and it what can only be described as a very unflattering performance, the Panthers took the points 52-32. In a game the Panthers would probably want to forget, they know come next week the player stocks will have a marked increase. Morwell on the other hand are in real trouble. Courageously playing short week after week will make it a very long and fruitless season, and they are desperately in need of players. The possibility of up to 3 returning next week will still leave them short and new signing’s are needed fast.

In other news, the Wellington Zone Gala day for Primary Schools were held last week, and with some 150 plus kids involved in the clinics and matches, it was St Thomas who were victorious. They will now join Kosciusko St PS later this year in the State Titles.

Also, the Victorian Country Under 15 and Under 18 Teams played against City on the weekend, and unfortunately for the Country lads, were well beaten by there City counterparts. Gippsland’s Luke Pain and Bryce Greishiemer have been invited to train with the State squad in the 18’s, with final selections in both age groups being named at a later date.

Round 3 of the League travels to Davidson St Traralgon where the hosts will take on East Gippsland in the early game. The Panthers will be out to set the pace against the highly improved East Gippsland outfit who continue to gather momentum. In the late game, the Gladiators will take on the Morwell Miners with Churchill looking to open the account for season 2001.
