Workshops For Successful Succession Planning

With funding support from the Australian government, Latrobe City is hosting a range of workshops dealing specifically with succession planning for owners and managers of small to medium enterprises.

By Latrobe City Council - 13th July 2007 - Back to News

The first workshop will be held on Tuesday 17 July at the civic precinct in Traralgon and further workshops are planned throught the rest of the year until late October. In all, ten different workshops will be conducted to address the all important issue of succession planning. This unique program will provide information and mentoring to participating businesses.

According to Leo Billington, Latrobe City’s senior business development officer, these practical seminars and workshops are being made possible by an Australian Government funded initiative under the Building Entrepreneurship in Small Business Program.

"For the founder of a family business, or in fact any business, a successful succession is a final test of greatness. Many do not relish the idea of planning now and tend to hold off to a later date.

"There is an attitude that all is well; that succession planning will take care of itself and, anyway, we’ll get around to it some-day, but not now. In fact, there are business people who have a strong aversion to succession planning," Mr Billington said.

"However, succession planning is a vital issue for businesses, the communities in which they operate and the greater economy. The effects of an ageing population are being felt in the local business community and in regional areas such as Latrobe City, so it is vital that people in business are well prepared," Mr Billington added.

"Topics to be covered during the program include financial planning, legal options, asset transfers, risks and contingencies and valuing the business. Those leading these workshops will be appropriate people with experience in, for example, legal and finance matters and counselling for preparation of succession plans.

The first workshop will be held on Tuesday 17 July 2007 at the civic precinct in Traralgon and will feature guest speaker David Wittner, chairman of the Wittner Shoe Group that operates 42 women’s fashion footwear stores in four states across Australia.

"David is also Director of the Victorian Board of Family Business Australia and a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. He will speak about his personal experience in succession planning from a management and equity point of view," Mr Billington explained.

Latrobe City’s economic development unit, working in conjunction with Baw Baw Shire’s economic development unit, was successful in obtaining funding for this 12-month program.

The first workshop will be held at the Latrobe City offices in Kay Street, Traralgon, from 2.30 pm until 5pm. The cost to cover refreshments is $15 and bookings are essential.
