Local youth take on life saving challenge

Ten of Latrobe City’s young residents have made a wonderful commitment and contribution to the community by undergoing the first stage of their Royal Life Saving Awards in our region.

By Latrobe City Council - 16th August 2006 - Back to News

The Royal Life Saving Awards empower the participant with the knowledge and skills to be able to make the right decisions in a survival circumstance – instinctive decisions that may help them or those around them to survive an aquatic emergency.

The Bronze and Rescue Awards teach an understanding of the lifesaving principles embodied in the four components of water rescue education: judgement, knowledge, skill and fitness. The Royal Life Saving Society Australia Program emphasises that the awards program is to encourage learning about water safety, and not just about participants passing a set skill test.

The mixed group of boys and girls underwent 18 sessions where they learnt how to respond to increasingly complex resuscitation situations involving conscious and unconscious victims, with different complications including obstructed airways or conducting Expired Air Resuscitation (EAR) in the water.

They also learnt how to tow and carry conscious and unconscious injured swimmers, how to perform deep underwater search patterns, how to make their swimming strokes more efficient as well as endurance swimming techniques, and many other life saving skills and theory.

Royal Life Saving Society Australia offers a number of awards which can be gained progressively. The participants last week received their Bronze Star award at the Morwell Leisure Centre.

Latrobe City network development officer and Bronze Star award instructor, Vivianne Everett, said that it was a wonderful thing that these 10 children have had the initiative to further their swimming and water safety knowledge.

"It is a great asset to our community to know that the youth are being proactive in learning skills that may assist with saving a life one day. I am extremely proud of these guys, as they have learnt more than what was required, demonstrating a keen, inquisitive nature," said Ms Everett.
