Sustainable Streetlights Shine In Bass CoastBass Coast Shire Council’s Sustainable Streetlighting Project is about to replace another 800 energy efficient light globes across the municipality. By Bass Coast - 28th October 2014 - Back to News Townships from San Remo to Jam Jerrup will benefit from the third and final stage of this project.
Anderson Ward Councillor, Bradley Drew, said existing 80-watt mercury vapour lights are being replaced with T5 fluorescent bulbs, which are 60 per cent more energy efficient.
"These new globes will also increase lighting quality, with light being directed to towards the ground where it is needed, rather than into the night-sky," Cr Drew said.
"A total of 1,772 light bulbs were replaced in 2013/14.
"Lights were replaced in townships from Inverloch along our coastline to San Remo, and lights across Phillip Island were also replaced."
The project received funding from the Federal Government to support 30 per cent of the replacement costs.
Cr Drew said the total cost of the project will be $1million across three years, with the reduction in Council’s lighting bill seeing the project pay for itself within nine years.
"This sustainable street-lighting project will save Council between $70,000 to $100,000 p year and cut carbon emissions by approximately 1,250 tonnes a year – about 50 per cent of our current street-light emissions," Cr Drew said.
"As well as significantly reducing our carbon emissions and improving our street-lighting quality, it’s great value for money!"
