wanted to experience the distress of losing a pet.

"If your cat or dog does go missing, one of the best ways to ensure we can find and return it to you is to for your pet to be registered and wearing a Council identification tag," said Mr Piasente.

"Under Victorian law, every cat and dog three months of age and over must be registered with their local council. Pets being registered for the first time must also be microchipped prior to registration," Mr Piasente said.

"Most people got their pet renewals and registrations into us by the closing date of 10 April. However, if you’ve got your registration reminder still stuck to the fridge, you need to act right now to get it into Council," said Mr Piasente.

The pet registration fee funds more than just a lost and found service. Council also manages wandering dogs and nuisance problems associated with pets in the community. This includes controls on dangerous and restricted dog breeds and monitoring animal welfare standards in pet shops, kennels, catteries, breeding and training businesses. Most people would also not be aware that Council collect statistics on all of these issues for research and conducts pet education programs within the community.

Mr Piasente reminded pet lovers to keep Sunday, 5 May 2012 free, as the popular Bass Coast Pet Expo will be on at the San Remo Foreshore from 10.00am – 3.00pm.

"The Expo is a wonderful day for all the family – including pets! It is also a terrific opportunity to get your cat or dog (over 3 months of age) microchipped at a discounted price."

Further details about pet registration and the Pet Expo are available from the Community Safety team on 1300 BCOAST (226 278) or on Council’s website www.basscoast.vic.gov.au.
