Community groups invited to apply for grants

Latrobe City Council is calling for applications from community groups, for grants to be made under its 2003/2004 Community Grants Program.

By Latrobe Shire Council - 7th August 2003 - Back to News

The program offers three types of funding – minor capital works, community development and assistance for the conduct of events.

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Graeme Middlemiss, said that over the last year, funding in each category had resulted in many useful, community-based projects being developed.

"Examples of minor capital works funding are the Traralgon Lions Club which received significant contributions for the ongoing development of the Newman Park Access for All Playground and the Glendonald Residents Association Inc received funding for the now complete Glendonald Toilet Block," Cr Middlemiss explained.

"In the events category a number of well-known and less well-known festivals or events received contributions via the community grants program. These included Moe Jazz Festival, the Church Street Fiesta in Morwell and the Latrobe Valley Eisteddfod," Cr Middlemiss continued.

"Projects that benefited from funding under the Community Development banner included the Latrobe City Youth Band and the Art Resource Collective, Yinnar, which is an after school arts program," Cr Middlemiss said.

"There are many fine examples of community groups working hard to create infrastructure improvements, organising events, both major and minor, as well as providing valuable community development programs within our municipality.

"As well as receiving financial help through the Community Grants program, community groups very often contribute to these projects by way of providing some of their own funding, as well as contributions made ‘in kind’, such as providing labour. It is a great way for the community to work together to achieve a common goal, such as producing an event, or extending clubrooms for example," Cr Middlemiss added.

"An extensive advertising campaign to promote the program is being carried out over the next few weeks, so that as many groups as possible can take advantage of these funding opportunities. If you belong to a community group or organisation and you have a project that needs funding, then this program may be a way for you to receive help and make a start on that project," Cr Middlemiss concluded.

Application forms are available from Council’s Citizen Service Centres at Moe, Morwell and Traralgon, by telephoning 1300 367 700 or accessing the City’s webpage, www.latrobe.vic.gov.au.

The deadline for receiving applications is 5pm on Friday 12 September 2003.
