New Bus Services Welcomed

Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Neville Goodwin, today welcomed the announcement from Parliamentary Secretary, Matt Viney, about increased public transport services being introduced across the Shire.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 4th October 2006 - Back to News

"That residents can now travel daily between Cowes, Cape Paterson, Inverloch and Wonthaggi is marvellous news.

"To be able to travel daily to Leongatha and Traralgon for a day out is also great to hear," said Cr Goodwin.

However, the most pleasing of the improvements, says Cr Goodwin, is the Wonthaggi Town Service running on a two hourly schedule, providing an opportunity for people to travel to and from work by public transport.

"This is a first for Wonthaggi," he added.

"It is good to see the new service being provided for residents of North Wonthaggi.

"It will also provide access to Wonthaggi North and St Joseph’s Primary Schools.

Cr Goodwin confirmed that on the Wonthaggi routes there will be some designated bus stops, but people will also be able to hail the bus along the route until the pattern of usage is established and other stops considered.

"The Phillip Island service will be even more user-friendly, with passengers able to ring Phillip Island Bus Lines and be picked up at a pre-arranged point", said Cr Goodwin.

Residents can also take advantage of the new Gippsland Bus Services low floor bus, which will operate on the Wonthaggi Town and Cape Paterson services.

"This bus is easily accessible for wheelchairs, prams, pushers and shopping trolleys and no booking is required, as with other wheelchair accessible services", informed Cr Goodwin.

To encourage people to try the new services, from 9-14 October, residents will be able to travel on the Wonthaggi Town Services and Cape Paterson service for FREE, courtesy of Bass Coast Transport Connections.

Transport Projects Facilitator for Bass Coast Transport Connections, John Sanderson said that Bass Coast Transport Connections has worked very closely with the Department of Infrastructure, ensuring there was local community input in developing the services.

"This is a very exciting announcement," said Mr Sanderson.

"People wanting to use public transport will now have a choice of days and times, an opportunity not currently available," said Mr Sanderson.

"Other improvements are still being considered by the Government, but further investment will depend upon use of these services," he continued.

Residents should note that the Wonthaggi Town Service, Cape Paterson, Inverloch and Leongatha and Cowes services will terminate at a new stop on the corner of Billson Street and Murray Street opposite the Medical Centre. The Traralgon service will continue to use the V/Line stop in Watt Street.

"Eventually all services will be consolidated at one interchange in Wonthaggi," Mr Sanderson added.

For more information about the services you can collect timetables from Council’s Customer Service Centres, their website www.basscoast.com.au, or call the Council on 5951 3311 or 5671 2211.

If you would like to make any comments about the new services contact John Sanderson on the above telephone numbers.
