Drive Safe And Be Aware

The recent wet weather has played havoc with our roads and the Bass Coast Road Safety Committee is reminding all Bass Coast residents to be aware of increased traffic and changing road conditions.

By Bass Coast - 15th October 2010 - Back to News

Council’s Deputy Mayor and chair of the Bass Coast Road Safety Committee, Veronica Dowman, is urging everyone to do their part to make the roads safer.

"The recent wet weather and storms and the increase in traffic with the desalination plant means our roads are busier and that we all need to take extra care," said Cr Dowman.

"Some roads are showing signs of wear and tear. Council is liaising closely with Thiess Degremont and VicRoads to ensure that damaged roads are repaired as quickly as possible.

"Coming up to Christmas, we can expect things to get busier. It’s important that we remain patient and focused on the road to ensure the safety of everyone

"At the moment traffic conditions are changing regularly, so drivers should pay extra attention to any signage and potential hazards," continued Cr Dowman.

Cr Dowman advised road users, especially those towing caravans and driving slowly to be courteous, considerate and aware of other road users by pulling over, where safe to do so, to let banked-up traffic pass.

Currently in Bass Coast there are three different authorities managing the maintenance of roads.

Bass Coast Shire Council manages local roads, Thiess Degremont/AquaSure manage the maintenance of some roads used for works on the desalination project and VicRoads, who manage arterial roads.

"Thiess Degremont has advised us that they now have extra resources for road maintenance and repair so that they can respond as quickly as possible to road damage," continued Mr Piasente.

"We have negotiated an agreement with VicRoads to reduce the speed limit on some roads and new signage will be installed shortly.

"Aquasure has traffic signage and control measures in place on some where construction traffic is heaviest, so motorists should watch out for these."

If you are unsure who to report your maintenance request to, contact Council on 1300 BCOAST (226 278) so your request can be passed on to the correct authority.
