Eastern Victorian motorists will benefit from safer, more reliable roads under a new $5 billion commitment from The Nationals and Liberals to repair and rebuild Victoria’s deteriorating road network. The Nationals’ Melina Bath said over a decade of Labor neglect had left regional roads in a dangerous and unacceptable condition.

Road safety pledge

Ms Bath said, "Reversing Labor’s years of neglect is a significant task, but we’re determined to restore Victoria’s roads within five years. We will eliminate one million potholes and comprehensively lift the standard of road repairs. The Nationals’ commitment will deliver a major boost to preventative road maintenance to stop potholes forming and returning after each downpour, alongside increased investment in roadside upkeep and drainage."

"I spend many hours driving and see firsthand the potholes and rough surfaces motorists face every day - these challenges can’t be dismissed any longer. A recent incident I experienced driving on the Traralgon Maffra Road highlighted the risks, after an oncoming truck struck a pothole and resulted in a projectile smashing my windscreen. Glass fragments showered the inside of my car, but the consequences could have been far more serious," Ms Bath said.

Ms Bath said it’s no secret Labor wasted billions on corruption and its mismanaged Big Build while our roads were left to decline. "The Allan government demands roadworthy vehicles but fails to deliver car worthy roads - burst tyres, broken rims and smashed windscreens are far too common. The Nationals’ Fair Share Guarantee will ensure regional Victoria receives 25 per cent of all new government infrastructure funding for roads, schools and hospitals."
