Latrobe City Council is refunding more than $160,000 in permit applications in line with the announcement last month of the Community Support Package.

Latrobe City Council's Mayor, Councillor Dan Clancey, said the package was aimed at reducing financial stress for business, community groups, clubs and not-for-profit organisations.

"To date, we've processed 574 refund letters and 278 permit refunds and we will be organising follow-up calls to ensure eligible businesses and groups have received their forms. This equates to $160,000 in funds that will land back in the hip-pocket of business and community, where it can be more effectively used," Cr Clancey said.

"Refunds include health registrations for business impacted by the pandemic restrictions such as cafes and restaurants, salons, hairdressers and tattoo parlours, as well as street trading and outdoor permit charges from March to end June.

"We know how hard COVID-19 has hit our community so we're doing what we can to boost cash flow. Whether that's reducing rent for tenants in Council-owned buildings, waiving fees for winter season sporting grounds and buildings usage, or refunding permit applications, every little bit helps."

Council has also agreed to pay all outstanding invoices to local businesses and suppliers on 14-day terms, rather than the usual 30 days

"It's tough out there at the moment, but we hope with the recently announced easing of restrictions, that these measures bolster our local business and clubs until a fuller reopening takes place. It's pleasing to see business adapt to new conditions and the community embrace those changes, effectively throwing a lifeline to the hospitality industry," Cr Clancey said.
