Tee – Up for Mental Health Golf Day Supports Local Organisations

Local golf day event held in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Traralgon to help raise funds to support Mental Health First Aid training courses.

Member for Morwell Russell Northe recently hosted a local golf day event in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Traralgon to help raise funds to support two local organisations deliver extra Mental Health First Aid training courses in the region.

Mr Northe was thrilled to announce that both Lifeline Gippsland and Talking Mental Health will each receive $6500 following what was an extremely successful and fun day.

"Mental Health as we know is an issue that keeps growing by the day, and one key component of helping to recognise the signs of mental health distress in someone close to you is to complete a Mental Health First Aid training course" said Mr Northe.

Mr Northe added that teaching people how to recognise the signs of mental health and what to do to provide assistance is a key step in working together to help those that are struggling, and we are over the moon to be assist Lifeline Gippsland and Talking Mental Health deliver these critical programs.

"We are so grateful to Russell for his commitment to supporting those in our community to live their best lives" added Michelle Possingham, CEO Lifeline Gippsland.

"Russell has always been a steadfast supporter of improved mental health in the Gippsland community" added Michelle.

"The generous support from all our sponsors including our naming rights sponsor the Gippsland Motor Group helped make this day the success that it was" said Mr Northe.

When sponsors were approached about the golf day they were more than happy to contribute to such a wonderful cause, each and every one of them had their own story around mental health - either through their own experience or by supporting a family member or friend through tough times.

"Sporting clubs are a perfect example of where mental health first aid training could be most beneficial. Unfortunately there have been far too many suicides in our local sporting clubs and across our communities more generally, and the delivery of Mental Health First Aid training courses in these environments could well make a positive difference." Mr Northe said.

Susanne Lampitt who teaches Mental Health First Aid said "Mental Health First Aid will provide local community members with improved knowledge, skills and attitudes in how to recognize when others are struggling"

Mr Northe also added that Golf Day fund-raiser could not have proceeded without the dedication of Rotary Club of Traralgon members. "I am extremely grateful to all that volunteered behind the scenes in bringing this day together, it would not have been the success it was without the tremendous effort put in by all involved" Mr Northe said.
