Latrobe City residents will be given the opportunity to dispose of trailer loads of green waste free of charge later this month, during a ‘free green waste disposal weekend’ provided by Latrobe City Council

on Saturday 28 February and Sunday 1 March 2009.

Latrobe City mayor, Cr Lisa Price, said council will waive charges for the disposal of leaves, grass and tree branches at all ‘PineGro’ green waste recycling facilities, which are located in Traralgon, Moe and Morwell.

"The waiving of fees encourages people to ensure their yards are cleared of all organic waste that could provide fuel in the event of an extended fire season," Cr Price explained.

"Strong winds and dry conditions have taken their toll on trees and many have lost limbs or even been uprooted. The free green waste disposal weekend provides an opportunity to clean up green waste debris that is too large for the fortnightly kerbside collection, which may have accumulated in recent months."

Latrobe City also provided a free green waste disposal weekend at the end of November 2008 to encourage residents to clean up their properties in preparation for the summer fire danger season.

"The events of recent weeks have emphasised how important it is to maintain properties in a fire-ready state," Cr Price said.

PineGro’s Morwell green waste collection centre is located in Monash Way and operates seven days a week, 9am to 5pm. The Moe green waste collection centre located at 31 Walhalla Road, and Traralgon green waste collection centre in Rocla Road operate 9am to 5pm on weekends.

Latrobe City’s manager natural environment sustainability, Matthew Peake, said it was important that residents in fire affected areas understand that burnt or charred vegetation cannot be accepted at green waste facilities.

"The green waste material processed at the Pine Gro green waste centres is converted to potting mixes, soil conditioners and other organic products. Charred and burnt material cannot be recycled in this way," Mr Peake explained.

"Commencing Saturday 21 February 2009 and until further notice, Latrobe City Council has arranged for two facilities to accept burnt vegetation from residents in the fire affected areas of Latrobe City free of charge."

The former Boolara landfill site on the Boolarra – Foster Road, Boolarra will be open 10am to 3pm daily. And the former Traralgon landfill site in Depot Road (extension of Liddiard Road, Traralgon and next to the current transfer station) will be open 9am to 4pm daily.

"Please note that these facilities for the disposal of burnt vegetation are for Latrobe City residents in fire affected areas only. Operators will be in attendance to record the names, addresses, and vehicle registration details of those using these facilities," Mr Peake added.
