Surfing with the prosThe Bass Coast Council will host the Phillip Island Pro QS 1000 event from 27 – 30 October this year. By Portal Admin - 18th September 2017 - Back to News This creates an exciting opportunity for local surfers to get on board with a World Surf League (WSL) qualifying series surf competition, to compete alongside and learn from some of the worlds most experienced surfers.
The Phillip Island Pro will include three key categories:
Mens QS 100 with 96-144 Competitors and US$10,000 prizemoney
Womens QS 1000 with 36-48 Competitors and US $5,000 prizemoney
Junior Challenge Invitational (U18) for both boys and girls
There will also be a Victorian Indigenous Invitational held concurrently, including up to eight invited surfers.
Bass Coast Shire Councillor and surf advocate, Cr Stephen Fullarton, explained the benefits of hosting the surf event are twofold: It will showcase the Island’s premium surf breaks promoting Phillip Island as a surfing destination, and it will create a clear pathway for local talent to progress in the sport.
"For many of our talented young surfers, living on the coast gives them a leg up in the sport. Hosting a Qualifying Series on our doorstep will strengthen this boost by providing a clear pathway for these young surfers and exposing them to significant learning and development opportunities," Cr Fullarton said.
"I am thrilled that along with Surfing Victoria we were successful in securing the Phillip Island Pro for the next five years, and I encourage all local surfers, young and old, to get involved in this fantastic event."
The competition is open to anyone and entries close on 26 September. Competitors are required to be WSL members. One off memberships can be purchased for US $75 from the WSL website where you can also register for the event. The registration cost is $150. Council is working with the Phillip Island Board Riders Club and the Phillip Island Surfing Reserve to find ways to best engage with and involve the community, and to create a sense of partnership with key stakeholders. Local organisations Phillip Island Nature Parks and Westernport Water have joined the event as silver sponsors.
