As part of the Wonthaggi Centenary Celebrations, Bass Coast Shire Council held a reunion for the former Councillors and Staff of the Borough of Wonthaggi.

Over 100 attended the celebration with some travelling from New South Wales and Queensland to catch up with fellow Councillors and Staff.

Bass Coast Shire Council’s Arts and Leisure Manager, Jenny Churchill, said the Borough Celebrations were an important part of the history of Wonthaggi.

"The Borough of Wonthaggi came into being on 4 January 2011," said Ms Churchill. "At this time Wonthaggi became the fifth largest town in Victoria.

"The staff and councillors involved in the Borough helped shape the Wonthaggi we know today."

Guest speakers included former Town Clerk, Noel Deed who travelled from Port Macquarie and former Mayor and Wonthaggi identity, Cr Des Biggs.

Both spoke of the struggles that the Council faced during the 1970s with minimal funds and growing demands for improved roads and community facilities.

Cr Biggs said with the Council’s tenacity, and some creative grant writing, Wonthaggi started to prosper.

Ms Churchill said over the course of the afternoon, many stories and memories were shared and friendships reignited.

"This celebration is one of the last special events planned by Bass Coast Shire Council to celebrate Wonthaggi’s Centenary," said Ms Churchill.

"Over the past three years various commemorations and celebrations have been held and there will be many more to come as organisations celebrate their individual centenaries.

"The Centenary Celebrations have provided an opportunity for the community to come together as each milestone was passed."

Borough guests were welcomed by Danny Luna, the Borough’s last Town Clerk and a current Bass Coast Shire Director.
