Certificates available for recognising volunteersCommunity and volunteer organisations are being invited to apply to Latrobe City Council for Certificates of Appreciation By Latrobe City Council - 20th June 2001 - Back to News Community and volunteer organisations are being invited to apply to Latrobe City Council for Certificates of Appreciation for presentation to their own volunteers as part of the International Year of Volunteers (IYV) tribute.
Additionally, individual citizens who know of ‘unsung’ volunteers, those who are not necessarily part of a community group or volunteer organisation, are also being asked to identify individuals who they would like to receive the appreciation certificates.
Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Brendan Jenkins, said there were thousands of volunteers working in Latrobe’s community who could and should be recognised for their unselfish contribution to the community, and the Certificate of Appreciation was one way in which every volunteer in the municipality could be especially thanked.
"2001 has been designated the International Year of Volunteers, and we are asking community organisations, volunteer organisations and individual citizens to nominate people in our municipality who should receive a certificate of appreciation for the untiring work they do in the community," Cr Jenkins said.
"Volunteers come from all walks of life and from across a broad spectrum of ages, ranging from young citizens who do a few chores for an elderly neighbour, to elderly citizens who teach young people skills and provide support and encouragement. They range from people who step into the breach in emergency situations, to quiet achievers who make an ongoing commitment to enhancing other peoples lives through an unpaid and often unrecognised act of service to others.
"Many of these people are Latrobe’s ‘unsung’ volunteers who are not part of an organisation as such, and thus receive little recognition in the community. Citizens who know of volunteers such as these, can arrange through Latrobe City for a Certificate of Appreciation, to be sent to them, Cr Jenkins explained.
"Hundreds of Latrobe’s volunteers work with community and volunteer organisations, in fields such as the arts, tourism, the environment, youth, family and community support, animal welfare, emergency services and the aged. While a number of these organisations initiate their own awards system and present their members with awards recognising service or achievement, we invite representatives from all of these groups to apply to Council for these International Year of Volunteering Certificates of Appreciation, so that every member of their organisation is recognised in this very special year," Cr Jenkins concluded.
Each Certificate of Appreciation is signed by the Premier of Victoria, the Hon Steve Bracks MP, and the Victorian Minister for Community Services, the Hon Christine Campbell MP.
Community and volunteer organisation representatives can request Certificates of Appreciation simply by nominating the number of certificates they need for distribution to their members, and contacting Wendy Hansen at Latrobe City Council, telephone 1300 367 700.
Individual citizens who would like to recognise one of Latrobe’s ‘unsung’ volunteers can provide the recipient’s name details on forms available at the Moe, Morwell or Traralgon Citizen Service Centre, or by telephoning Latrobe City Council on 1300 367 700. They can choose to present or mail the certificate to the recipient themselves, or request Latrobe City to mail it directly to the recipient.
The Certificates of Appreciation will be available until Friday 31 August.
