Latrobe City's New Headquarters

Latrobe City’s new corporate headquarters building in Morwell has been officially handed over to Council by Kane Constructions following completion of the building’s construction and the vast majority of the associated civic square project.

By Latrobe Shire Council - 7th December 2004 - Back to News

The corporate headquarters is a two-storey building incorporating a large open-plan work area on each floor, meeting rooms, managerial offices, a council meeting room and a service centre for the community.

Latrobe City’s Chief Executive Officer, Paul Buckley, said the architect’s design principles included that the building be dynamic and enlivening to the streetscape; welcoming and inclusive to the community; an environmental showcase – educational and inspirational; forward thinking – progressive and sustainable; a landmark building – iconic and specific; cost effective; flexible – allowing for change and growth; responsive – generated by user needs and environment; and a catalyst to civic pride and growth.

"We believe those objectives have been met, and we now look forward over the next few months to the building being fitted out with furnishings such as work stations, storage cabinets, and all the necessary equipment to make the corporate headquarters functional on a day-to-day basis," Mr Buckley said.

"The corporate headquarters is on budget and on schedule to open for the delivery of council business in March 2005.

"Councillors and staff have been given familiarisation tours of the new building in recent weeks to explain the features of the corporate headquarters and the working environment. The new corporate headquarters is very much a building to maximise the efficiencies of council business and the delivery of the numerous programs and services to our community.

"It’s extremely important to note that whilst the new corporate headquarters in Morwell is the administrative base for council, the day-to-day front counter services that our ratepayers receive at the Traralgon office and Moe office will continue to be delivered from those centres. This means that enquiries or transactions in relation to rates, pet registrations, parking permits, preschool enrolments, building approvals and a host of other business aspects associated with council will continue to conducted at our service centres.

"In Traralgon, the library which is currently cramped into the Kath Teychenne Centre, will be relocated to the civic buildings in Kay Street following the move of administration staff, which will create a vastly improved library facility collocated with a strong customer service presence," Mr Buckley added.

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Darrell White, said work will be continuing on construction of the car park and landscaping the civic square and car park environment over the next few weeks. "It’s extremely gratifying to see the project reach this stage in its development," Cr White said.

"Providing the benefit to the community of housing council’s administrative staff together in the one building has been a long-held objective of this council," Cr White said.

"When the former municipalities of the Traralgon Shire, the City of Traralgon, the City of Morwell, the City of Moe and parts of the Narracan and Rosedale Shires were amalgamated by the Kennett government, little thought was given to the practicality of providing efficient administration with staff operating from a number of small buildings spread across the amalgamated municipality. There was no single building that could accommodate council’s administrative staff.

"Having our administrative staff under the same roof means far greater efficiencies as staff and departments do not have to travel across the municipality for meetings, and the open-plan nature of the building creates ideal opportunities for staff to collaborate on key projects and programs," Cr White said.
