Wonthaggi Celebrates Old & NewWonthaggi will come alive on the weekend of February 24 and 25, with celebrations to launch the finished Wonthaggi Town Spine Project and Heritage Walks. By Bass Coast Shire Council - 2nd February 2007 - Back to News The Bass Coast Shire Council, Wonthaggi and District Historical Society and Bass Coast Artists Society have come together to work on the event, which will kick off at 10am on Saturday.
Council’s Acting Arts and Leisure Coordinator, Jenny Milkins said the celebrations would begin on Soldiers Reserve with a dedication of the Cenotaph and Spine Project.
"This will be followed with a rousing chorus by the Bass Coast Chorale.
"The celebration will then proceed down McBride Avenue to Apex Park," informed Ms Milkins.
"Here children and adults can enjoy the singing and join in the fun of Professor Silly and Tulip from Kazooey Island or explore the displays and exhibitions in the area.
"You will be able to watch well known local artists painting scenes of Wonthaggi or visit the Art Exhibition by the Bass Coast Artists Society in the Goods Shed," she enthused.
When the whistle blows at 12.00 noon, it will be time to celebrate the Grand Opening of the restored Railway Station Museum.
"Following the opening there will be regular free guided bus tours to areas of historic interest run by the Wonthaggi and District Historical Society," advised Ms Milkins, "or you can take the self guided walks of Town Heritage Sites."
"The Friends of the Bass Coast Rail Trail have also organised a community walk and bike ride.
"Residents and visitors, particularly those who have not used the Rail Trail before, are invited to participate," continued Ms Milkins.
The museum, guided bike rides, art exhibition and heritage tours will also be available from 10am to 3pm on the Sunday.
