Emphasis on stewardship
East Gippsland Shire Mayor Cr Tom Crook said people in East Gippsland value the natural beauty of the environment. "During consultation for our council Plan, our residents were very clear that the environment was important to them. By rolling up our sleeves, we can work together to help maintain the natural beauty of our region," Cr Crook said.
The event is more than just picking up litter; it serves as a reminder of our environmental responsibilities. Commonly reported items collected by volunteers include cigarette butts, coffee cups and soft plastics.
"Seeing the types of litter lining our streets, bushlands, and waterways, it encourages each of us to consider practical ways we can prevent that litter in the first place. Clean Up Australia Day not only addresses the issue of litter but also raises awareness around waste reduction, recycling and sustainable living," Cr Crook said.
Community waste responsibility
Council supports community Clean Up Australia Day events by accepting the collected waste free at its waste sites. (The waste must be in Clean Up Australia Day branded bags.) "As we come together for Clean Up Australia Day, it's important to recognise that waste is a community responsibility. The community can all contribute to the health of our environment."
"By actively taking part in events like this, we can demonstrate our commitment to preserving the natural beauty of our communities for future generations. Let's work hand in hand to keep East Gippsland clean and beautiful." Cr Crook added.
