Telstra shareholding federal MPs must abstain: Ingram

The Independent State MP for Gippsland East, Craig Ingram, has called on all Federal MPs to declare their personal pecuniary interests in the telecommunications giant, Telstra.

By Craig Ingram - 9th September 2005 - Back to News

"As we have seen in recent weeks, the proposed sale of the telco will impact on the share price and those MPs with a financial interest in the company must declare their shareholding and abstain from the vote," Mr Ingram said today.

"Pushing through the full sale of Telstra against the wishes of the vast majority of Australians is bad enough, but it would be the absolute corruption of the political process if members of parliament who vote for this undemocratic sale have a pecuniary interest in the outcome.

"The recent behaviour of the government and Telstra in covering up the real condition of the networks, combined with Telstra’s dividend striping and the government’s criticism of the hand-picked executives chosen to drive through the sale, is appalling.

"This is one of the most important issues in politics at present and it is essential that shareholding Federal MPs publicly declare their share interests and abstain from the vote," Mr Ingram concluded.
