as well as to post offices and general stores in the townships of Tyers, Toongabbie, Glengarry, Traralgon South, Boolarra and Yinnar.

The calendar, which identifies the alternate weeks that recycling and green waste bins are collected in specific parts of the municipality, has been created with a magnetic strip to stick easily to the fridge or similar metallic surface.

Latrobe City’s waste education officer, Peter Collins, explained that the calendar has taken on a new look this year. "The front of this year’s calendar provides easy to read, pictorial information that explains what can and cannot be recycled. Placing this information on the front means that residents can quickly and easily obtain guidance when deciding if something should be recycled or is waste. It’s a decision we might need to make several times a day," Mr Collins explained.

"The collection dates themselves are less likely to be accessed frequently, so these are located on the reverse side.

Mr Collins said it is very important that residents understand what can be recycled to reduce the level of contamination in recycling and green waste bins. "Having this information on view each day of the year will help residents make the right decisions," Mr Collins said.

"Unfortunately there is still far too much contamination turning up in recycling and green waste bins. Contamination of green waste with plastic bags and household rubbish is of particular concern at present," Mr Collins said.

Mr Collins said there are a number of waste products that should never be placed in any kerbside collection bin – including in the garbage bin. "These include things such as asbestos, chemicals, oil, paint, hot ashes, engine or car parts, syringes, soil and liquids of any kind.

"This year’ recycling and green waste collection calendar includes a list of these items.

"The best way to dispose of old and unwanted paint, oil, gas bottles, cleaning chemicals, pesticides, fluorescent tubes and many other items that cannot be disposed of the household garbage, is through the annual ‘Detox Your Home’ day," Mr Collins said.

"Residents should note that the next ‘Detox Your Home’ free household chemical collection will take place on Saturday 11 August this year at the Latrobe Regional Airport between 1pm and 4pm. This ‘Detox Your Home’ day is highlighted on the new calendar,’ Mr Collins added.

If any resident, business or shop owner has not yet received their new 2007-2008 recycling and waste collection calendar, they can obtain one at any Latrobe City service centre, or should contact Cleanaway on 1800 007 543 or Latrobe City on 1300 367 700.

Residents in the rural townships of Tyers, Toongabbie, Glengarry, Traralgon South, Boolarra and Yinnar will find copies of their recycling and green waste collection calendar available at their post office or general store.
