Bracks Cripples Cann River Community

Cann River could be the first Victorian community to fall victim to the Bracks Government’s secret agenda to destroy Victoria’s forestry industry, Liberal Member for Gippsland Province Philip Davis said today.

By Philip Davis - 17th May 2005 - Back to News

Mr Davis said the future of 35 Cann River residents was in jeopardy thanks to a 22 per cent increase in royalty charges for sawlogs, dramatically affecting the town’s Hallmark Oaks saw mill.

The increase has been introduced by Vicforests, the Bracks Government-owned commercial forestry arm, and has been the final blow to the timber industry and this particular Cann River saw milling business.

"The saw mill is now on the market, but if it does not sell, the business will simply close," Mr Davis said.

"The mill employs 50 people, 35 of whom live in Cann River and 20 of them live in company housing.

"So the reality for these people is not only the prospect of losing their jobs but also their homes.

"This saw mill is the largest employer in Cann River - to see it close would be a tragedy for this community."

Mr Davis said the Bracks Government had placed immense pressure on the timber industry in recent years, implementing regulations without adequate consultation.

"This latest change to the industry will cripple timber businesses and one has to question whether this is part of the Bracks Government’s grand plan to destroy the industry," he said.

"Timber is so important to the survival of East Gippsland communities – if the Bracks Government succeeds in destroying the industry, the communities will also disappear.

"Cann River could be the first in a long line of saw mill closures that will in turn destroy country Victoria."
