community gatherings, and much, much more!

Latrobe City’s arts officer and chair of Festival organisers Creative Gippsland, Amanda Owen, said that the Gippsland Arts Festival extended from Phillip Island all the way to Mallacoota and everywhere in between.

"It showcases the diversity of Gippsland’s cultural life in all its forms and judging by past success it is also very much an expression of the significance of the arts in community life.

"Each year the festival has a special element and for 2013 it is the Great Gippsland Gatescape. Everyone in Gippsland is encouraged to get involved by decorating their gate to create a splash of colour in unexpected places, and help create a unique arts trail connecting Gippsland towns," Ms Owen explained.

"Making things can be a wonderful shared experience and Gatescape in particular is about bringing people together: families, co-workers, artists, farmers, youth, schools and community groups to collaborate on gate-art, to show off their creativity, their street, their town, and their part of the region.

"For example community groups may like their gate to reflect current issues of significance, while others may choose to examine cultural or heritage themes. School students might like to create a story about their school and its achievements and successes," Ms Owen said.

"Gate decorations need not cost a fortune: Gatescape artworks could include used machinery parts, recycled materials, timber and fabric, tin, steel – anything non-perishable and anything that comes to hand.

"Gate categories include best farm gate, home gate, garden gate, business gate, or school gate. There is a most innovative use of materials category, too or why not enter a humorous gate and create some laughter as well.

"If people are unable to decorate a gate, they can still be involved by voting for the ‘People’s Choice Award’ through the website.

"Once the gate is finished, photos and a brief description can be uploaded onto the Creative Gippsland website. People can enter right up until 31 May when the judging will be held – there are cash prizes for the best in each category, and a major prize for Best in Show," Ms Owen concluded.
