Pegasus Soccer Club in Morwell is one of 11 clubs throughout Victoria to have scored a share in $840,000 worth of Victorian Government funding from the Strengthening the World Game Program.

Nationals Member Morwell Russell Northe said local regional clubs are attracting greater numbers of both males and females to their ranks. Interest in soccer has grown locally and this in part can be attributed to news that Melbourne Heart will play the Wellington Phoenix in an A league home and away game in the Latrobe Valley in December.

"This funding boost will ensure Pegasus Soccer Club can not only cater for growing demand but accommodate even more people from the wider community wanting to join in the fun of soccer," Mr Northe said.

"By improving local facilities and playing conditions we can boost memberships, participation, home ground support and get more people more active more often at Ronald Reserve," he said.

Mr Northe said Ronald Reserve has been allocated $60,000 to upgrade the current lighting to competition/match practice standard and infrastructure to make further lighting upgrades in the future.

"This is fantastic news for the Pegasus Soccer Club, and will ensure that their facilities are comparable to their state wide competitors. I commend the players and club management for their proactive attitude in applying for this funding for the club’s benefit."

Latrobe City mayor, Councillor Darrell White, said that the announcement of the funding for the lighting upgrade at Ronald Reserve was most welcome.

"Upgrading the existing lighting at Ronald Reserve Morwell will provide a real boost to the Pegasus Soccer Club, the only State League 2 club from Gippsland," Cr White said.

Ward Councillor, Graeme Middlemiss, added that the project will mean that the lighting can be upgraded to full match standard.

"The upgrade will allow for night matches to be played at the reserve. The club can also train at night. The upgrade has obvious benefits for the club’s capacity to improve its position, attract new players and enjoy the status that a top-class facility can bring," Cr Middlemiss said.

Latrobe City Council is contributing $25,000 to the project from its capital works program.
