Western Gateway Development Unveiled

Local MLAs Brendan Jenkins and Ian Maxfield, Latrobe City Mayor Councillor Darrell White, and Council representatives, reviewed plans for the Western Gateway Development at Moe on Friday.

The Western Gateway Development on the Princes Freeway near the Gippsland Heritage Park at Moe, effectively designates the Moe

turn-off and creates a sense of expectation prior to the opening up of

the Latrobe Valley landscape at Hernes Oak.

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Darrell White, said that the Western Gateway concept had come out of numerous submissions to the Latrobe Valley Ministerial Taskforce which highlighted the need for the Princes Freeway entry to the City at Moe to better define arrival in the Latrobe Valley.

Funding for the project has been equally allocated by the State Government and Council.

"Following an extended examination of potential design concepts by Melbourne design firm Landscape Victoria, detailed plans have now been completed and work will shortly commence," Cr White said.

"The Western Gateway is a high quality landscape design which aims to create a sense of expectation over a one kilometre section of freeway from the municipal boundary to the exit into Moe.

"Rather than construct a single iconic feature like a statue that can be easily missed by travellers, the Gateway will feature a long vista of attractively massed tree and shrub plantings, ending at the Moe turnoff, where a substantial decorative sign and steel background will highlight arrival at Moe, representing entry into Latrobe City. The sign will be lit to ensure continuous visibility to passing travellers," Cr White said.

Latrobe City’s Acting Chief Executive Officer, Paul Buckley, said the project had been designed in two self-contained stages, with the second part continuing past the Heritage Park and concluding at the Watsons Rd freeway overpass.

"The second element is not included in the present funded component and will be considered in the future," Mr Buckley explained.

Landscape Victoria’s broader master plan envisages this design treatment eventually being replicated at the eastern approach to Latrobe City at Traralgon.

"This first stage of the Gateway at Moe has been designed to be innovative, eye catching and economical to build," Mr Buckley said.

"The Western Gateway is an important first step in addressing landscape vistas in the Latrobe Valley, and will further support the LatrobeFirst campaign to improve external perceptions of the region.

"It’s great to see that after a long period of careful design, development will very shortly commence in the area," Mr Buckley added.
