Twelve New Citizens For Bass CoastTwelve new citizens received a warm reception at the citizenship ceremony held at the Bass Coast Civic Centre last night. By Bass Coast - 28th April 2011 - Back to News Family and friends filled the Council chamber and enthusiastically welcomed the new Australian citizens, based in Wonthaggi, Rhyll, Cape Woolamai, Cape Paterson, Coronet Bay, Inverloch and Wimbledon Heights.
Cr Dowman welcomed Mrs Helen Caddy, Mr Edvaldo Da Silva, Master Gustavo Ferreira Silva, Ms Rosilaine Ferreira De Carvalho, Ms Joan Gaunt, Mrs Lang Hoang, Mr Rene-Pierre Isautier, Mrs Margaret Klerck, Ms Olena Kosaruk, Ms Pia and Mr Torsten Lekander and Ms Sarah White.
"Congratulations on officially choosing Australia as your new home," said Cr Dowman.
"Some of you have lived in Australia for many years and the citizenship ceremony can be an emotional step to take.
"I am sure you are already aware that Australia is wonderful place to call home and we’re glad to have you as part of the Bass Coast community," continued Cr Dowman.
The new citizens originated from Malta, Brazil, United Kingdom, Vietnam, France, Kazakhstan and Sweden. Sharing details of what had brought them to Australia, the Mayor revealed that some of our newest citizens had lived here for over 50 years while others had only arrived in the past five.
"All of you have amazing stories and some of you have taken an incredible journey to get here," said Cr Dowman.
Bass Coast CEO Allan Bawden, Cr Gareth Barlow, Cr Peter Paul, Hon Ken Smith MLA and Mr Russell Broadbent MHR attended the ceremony.
The 2011 Australia Day Award winners, Caroline Talbot (Citizen of the Year), Noel West (Sports Person of the Year) and Bruce and Sheila Campbell (Family Achievement Award) were also on hand.
The new citizens received a citizenship certificate, an Australian native plant and a Bass Coast gift bag and enjoyed light refreshments with family and friends after the ceremony.
