All Latrobe outdoor pools open from Saturday 2 DecemberLatrobe City’s outdoor pools are gearing up for a fun-packed, activity-filled summer, with the Traralgon and Moe outdoor pools opening their gates for the season on Saturday 2 December. By Latrobe City - 22nd November 2006 - Back to News Being solar heated, the Yallourn North outdoor pool was the first to make a splash this season and opened early in November.
Latrobe City’s leisure centre coordinator, Georgina Mitchell, said opening day at the Traralgon and Moe outdoor pools will be free, with entry from 10am – 7pm. "Snacks and drinks are available for sale at the kiosk facilities and the barbecue will be fired up. Expect fun and games and a special appearance from 3TR FM," Ms Mitchell said.
"Morning swimming is available again this year at the Traralgon outdoor pool with a session running on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday between 6am and 8am. A complimentary healthy lifestyle breakfast will be provided for those who participate.
"Look out for some new activities at the pools this year with Tai Chi, Aqua aerobics, Pilates on the grass, beach volleyball, diving competitions at Moe, plus much more," Ms Mitchell said.
"We have extended the opening hours at all of the pools this year to include a lunch time option during term time for those wanting to do lap or take part in aqua aerobics but want to do so at a slightly quieter time," Ms Mitchell added.
For those who find the initial plunge into the cooler early summer waters at Traralgon and Moe a little daunting, the opportunity to enjoy an early summer dip at the Yallourn North outdoor pool holds a great attraction.
"Being solar heated; Yallourn North Pool offers more temperate waters early in the season, so is a great hit with mums and dads who want to share the fun of the outdoor pool with their children. With ample shade, a toddler pool and a children’s activity room, Yallourn North provides for a great family day out," Ms Mitchell said.
"To maximise enjoyment at the outdoor pools and minimise over exposure to the harmful effects of the sun, don’t forget, you are welcome to take sun umbrellas to the outdoor pools with you. Sunscreen is also provided at all pool sites in case patrons forget theirs. Please ask at the kiosk or a lifeguard if you require some," Ms Mitchell added.
The grounds surrounding the Traralgon outdoor pool have been a hive of activity in recent weeks, with works on a replacement reticulation system to extend the life of the outdoor pool now drawing to a conclusion.
Latrobe City’s manager arts and leisure, Paul Holton, said installation of the replacement reticulation system at the outdoor pool had been initiated as a responsible environmental objective to minimise any potential for water loss.
"As much of Australia faces drought conditions and even water shortages, it’s important we all play our part in preventing any water wastage. As a consequence council brought forward this initiative to ensure the Traralgon outdoor pool was super efficient for the start of the season," Mr Holton said.
"The installation of the replacement system has now been completed, with the backfilling of the excavations and pouring of the concrete apron to be undertaken later this week," Mr Holton said.
"Following the backfilling and concreting works, instant turf is being laid to reinstate the pool amenity ready for opening day. Patrons can also look forward to enjoying new seating and additional shade structures at the Traralgon facility," Mr Holton said.
Operating hours at all Latrobe City outdoor pools: Until Sunday 17 December 2006 and from Monday 29 January 2007 – Monday 12 March 2007: Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays 3.30pm - 7pm; Tuesdays and Thursdays 1.30pm - 7pm; Saturdays and Sundays 12noon - 7pm. From Monday 18 December 2006 – Sunday 28 January 2007: 12noon – 7pm seven days a week. All outdoor pools are closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
