New look traffic school launched

The traffic school in Morwell has received a renovation and rebranding with Latrobe City mayor, councillor Lisa Price renaming the facility International Power Traffic School, at a celebratory launch last Friday.

There has been a traffic school at the site since 1967 when the Rotary Club of Morwell launched ‘Valstar’. Ten years ago, the facility was renamed International Power Hazelwood Children’s Traffic School and now, the name has been streamlined to reflect the involvement of the broader community as well as the contribution from both Hazelwood and Loy Yang.

Latrobe City mayor, Lisa Price said that the upgrade of the traffic school had given the facility a fresh new look.

"The internal and external walls of all the buildings and the outdoor furniture have been repainted; the toilet block has been significantly upgraded; the road surfaces have been repaired and the fence made more secure, and new shrubs and trees have been planted to beautify the site. Further, new bikes, helmets and new resources for educating people have been purchased.

"Along with the physical aspects of the rebranding, we are also exploring a number of opportunities to broaden the centre’s use. Having dropped the word ‘children’ from the facility’s title, we will be targeting a wider audience. Programs include education for school crossing supervisors, scooter education, and other traffic related areas, as well as possible expansion into falls prevention activities for older people, a meeting place for walking clubs and homework clubs," Cr Price explained.

"The traffic school has well deserved reputation as a fun facility for educating preschool and school-aged children in pedestrian and traffic safety, as well as being a great party venue. It is the only facility of its kind in the region and services the whole of Gippsland.

"These activities will continue to be encouraged and now with the ongoing support from International Power, we can explore other exciting new opportunities for the broader community," Cr Price concluded.
