Bass Coast Seniors FestivalNow in its 27th year, the Victorian Seniors Festival, from 4 to 11 October, includes more than 1,000 free and low cost events across Melbourne and regional Victoria. By Bass Coast Shire Council - 25th September 2009 - Back to News Melbourne and Regional Events Programs are available at Council’s Customer Service Centres, Coles supermarkets and libraries.
Bass Coast Mayor, Cr John Duscher said seniors heading to Melbourne would find a range of activities to keep them busy.
"Victorian Seniors Card holders have the opportunity to travel free on the metropolitan public transport network and on regional bus services from 4 to 11 October," said Cr Duscher.
"There will also be free travel on V/Line Services for seniors on 6, 7, 8 10 and 11 October.
"Together with local community groups and the Department of Planning and Community Development, we have a full program of events across the Shire that seniors can get involved in.
"Organisers have tried to keep the costs down so that everyone can participate. Many of these events are free or provided at low cost.
"I encourage all seniors to take advantage of the free transport and local events and enjoy the week long festival," said Cr Duscher.

Below is a listing of some events being held in Bass Coast.
· Corinella and District Community Centre, together with the Bass Coast Strollers, are hosting a free ‘Go for your life’ Seniors Walk on Monday, 5 October. If you are interested in exploring the lovely shore and surrounding district come along and walk with friendly people of varying abilities and varied interests. A free morning tea will be served after the walk. Contact the Centre on 5678 0777 for more information.
· The Warrawee Senior Citizens’ Club in Inverloch has organised a sausage sizzle on Monday, 5 October from noon. This will be followed with afternoon entertainment by the Music Makers. Cost is $1.00 for members and $2.00 for non-members. Please RSVP to Marjorie Ford on 5672 3667.
· On Tuesday, 6 October from noon, the Wonthaggi Senior Citizens’ Club will host a free barbecue lunch followed by a fun afternoon of carpet bowls. Contact Joy at the club on 5672 1301 for catering purposes.
· At the Cowes Cultural Centre on Thursday, 8 October commencing at 2pm, there is a live performance ‘When Love Comes to Call’. A delicious cabaret of songs by Cole Porter, George & Ira Gershwin, Kurt Weill, Jerome Kern and Blitzstein, exploring the highs, lows and wonders of 'that mysterious thing called love'. For $8.00 you will be royally entertained by actor and musician, Wendy Grose, and afternoon tea will be served after the show. The event is organised by the Phillip Island Arts & Cultural Committee and you can contact Anne Davie on 5956 8216 for more information. Tickets are available at the door.
· A free concert is being held at Stony Creek Race Course on Friday, 9 October 2009. Debra Byrne from Young Talent Time days, will be performing. Council will provide free coach transport to the event with pick-up points at Grantville, Anderson interchange, Cowes, Wonthaggi and Inverloch. For your free tickets, please contact Linda Ryan on 1300 BCOAST (266 278). Tickets will be allocated on a first-come-first-serve basis. The concert commences at 1.00pm and includes afternoon tea. Arrival time at the race course is scheduled for noon to allow time to enjoy a BYO picnic lunch before the concert begins (further details will be provided upon registration).
· The Phillip Island RSL has a week of activities which includes free and low-cost events such Day Club Showcase Day on Monday, 5 October, Morning Melodies on Tuesday, 6 October, a demonstration of cooking for one or two by the RSL’s Executive Chef, James Gross on Wednesday, 7 October and on Friday, 9 October, a Heart Foundation guest speaker will present followed by a ‘Heart Healthy’ lunch. Call RSL reception on 5952 1004 for further details on any of these activities.
· The Wonthaggi Italian Senior Citizens’ Club is hosting a celebratory barbeque, followed by carpet bowls and board and card games on Thursday, 15 October from 12.30pm. The afternoon of food, fun and entertainment is free. Please RSVP to Lena on 5672 2942 for catering purposes.
