Approximately 95 community group representatives attended a ‘Working with the Media Information Forum’ in Morwell recently.

The session, which was organised by Latrobe City Council’s Community Development Strategy team, provided community organisations with tips and hints on aspects of media presentation and coverage.

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Graeme Middlemiss said that the session was offered in response to an assessment conducted by Council of Community Groups needs for training and networking opportunities.

"The feedback we received during the assessment was that Community Groups needed to learn how to gain good media coverage for their work," Cr Middlemiss said.

The forum addressed the key issues of how to present news for easy processing by the media, what to include in a press release, how to work with journalists and how to present sponsorship requests to the media. The information will help equip community groups with the necessary tools to promote themselves and their activities.

Sessions were delivered by a number of local media representatives including Lynne Smith from the Latrobe Valley Express, Celine Foenander from Win TV and Pasquale Pugliese and Andrew Pomeroy from Southern Cross Ten Network.

The speakers explained how information should be presented in order to make the media and the general community aware of who the group is, what activity or event they are undertaking, when this activity is happening, and why it is newsworthy. Information was also presented on what to include when making an approach to the media for sponsorship of an event or activity.

Teresa Pugliese, Coordinator Latrobe Community Service Centres said that following on from this session, four more Community Group Information Forums have been organised for 2003.

"The upcoming forums will focus on the training needs of community and non-profit organisations within the municipality. These will provide community and non-profit groups with an opportunity to learn about areas that impact on their day-to-day operations.

"The topics covered at these forums will range from charitable trusts and Government grants, sponsorship and fundraising ideas, recruiting volunteers and committee members as wells as refreshing the community groups insurance and risk management issues," Ms Pugliese said.

Cr Middlemiss added that that further forums to be run by the City will aim to strengthen and enhance the level of interaction between Council and community and non-profit organisations.

The Forums will take place at the Italian/Australian Sporting Club of Gippsland, Princes Highway Morwell. All sessions will be run at night from 6.30pm to approximately 9pm.
