in commercial, industrial, public or residential buildings.

Latrobe City mayor, Councillor Tony Zimora said that the first seminar in the series was a huge success.

"There were 130 people in attendance, most of them building owners, who wished to be kept informed of the developments in this crucial area of building safety and maintenance. The presentation advised building owners about their responsibilities in ensuring safety measures are in place as well as discussing record keeping and how to comply with regulations such as annual essential safety measures reports.

"The information presented allowed building owners to assess their current maintenance action plans and to ensure they were meeting their obligations in this respect," Cr Zimora explained.

Latrobe City’s building services coordinator, Chris Watson, said that the aim of the campaign was to ensure that building owners knew of their responsibilities.

"Heather Smith, Director of Fred Smith Automotive in Bayswater, travelled to Latrobe City to attend the seminar and sent a letter to us afterwards, expressing her gratitude to us for taking ‘this bold initiative’ and for providing information that was ‘invaluable’. She said she appreciated the opportunity to be brought up to date with forthcoming legislative changes.

"The evaluation forms that were handed out to delegates on the day echoed that sentiment. We received many positive comments such as ‘gave direction and assistance in identifying steps to be taken for essential safety measures’; ‘helped thinking on future maintenance’ and ‘focussed and specific on what we really need to know to manage’. The general consensus was that the information was clearly presented, outlining the specific obligations of both landlords and tenants," Mr Watson explained.

"By disseminating this information, we hope to encourage a higher level of compliance with building regulations which in turn may help to reduce the risk to the public at large, using buildings of this type," Mr Watson concluded.
