New recycling and waste service trucks roll into town

The first of eleven trucks for Latrobe City’s new waste and recycling service rolled into Latrobe City on Tuesday.

By Latrobe Shire Council - 28th June 2004 - Back to News

The new trucks are owned by Cleanaway, the successful tenderer for the new service, and are a brilliant white with a distinctive Latrobe City wave of energy emblazoned on the side.

Latrobe City’s Manager Waste Services, Mike McCaughan, said the new trucks combine state-of-the art engineering for efficient waste and recycling collection, allied with important health and safety features. "Nine of the new trucks will be in place when the new service starts," Mr McCaughan said

"The number of trucks required to operate the service has increased significantly on the previous contract because on any one collection day in your street, two trucks will operate, one collecting your rubbish and one picking up either recyclables or greenwaste," Mr McCaughan said.

Mr McCaughan said all residents across Latrobe City should by now have received their bins. "Bins are still being delivered to businesses and unit dwellers, but these should be in place by Thursday," Mr McCaughan said.

"Most residents have received two new wheelie bins, one for general waste and one for green garden waste. A small number of residents in Yallourn North who privately own their existing rubbish bin have also been provided with a new yellow-lidded bin for their recycling," Mr McCaughan explained.

"The new general waste or rubbish bin is a red-lidded 120 litre bin, smaller than the one residents’ currently use. The lime-green lidded wheelie bin with a 240 litre capacity is intended for residents’ green garden waste.

"Most residents convert their existing bin to contain their recyclables, such as paper, cardboard, aluminium and steel cans, and glass and plastic bottles and containers," Mr McCaughan explained.

"General waste will be collected weekly, while recyclables and green garden waste will be collected on alternate fortnights. It means just two bins will be put out every week.

"Each resident should have received a kit with their new bins that explains the new service in detail. The kit contains an information booklet, a calendar explaining which bins should be put out for collection which week, and two ‘Recycling Only’ stickers which are to be placed in position on the old bins when the service changes over on Thursday," Mr McCaughan said.

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Darrell White, said the new waste and recycling service was being introduced to meet the challenges being set by the state government for waste reduction through increased recycling.

"Everyone accepts that we need to significantly reduce what we throw out as rubbish, and the new service provides the tools to significantly reduce the amount of unwanted items that end up being buried in the ground," Cr White said.

"Newspapers, bottles, jars, cans, and cardboard, lawn clippings and prunings are no longer ‘waste’ in today’s society. They can all be recycled, and through the new three-bin recycling and waste collection service we can all play our part," Cr White said.

Gippsland Supervisor for Cleanaway, Jeff Sawyer, reminded residents there had been some minor changes to collection days in some streets.

"In the special information packages distributed with the bins, there are details of collection days, as well as instructions for placement of the new bins on the roadside. Residents can quickly identify if there are any changes to collection days that affect them," Mr Sawyer said.

"The information package also gives lots of hints on reducing household waste by separating recyclables, and tips on what can be placed in the green garden waste bin.

"The key thing to remember is not to place any of the new bins out until the start of the new service on Thursday," Mr Sawyer added.

Residents with questions relating to the new service, or any who have not received their new bins, are asked to contact Cleanaway’s customer service staff telephone 1800 007 543.
