Are You Ready For The Ride?Traralgon will be brimming with everything bicycle on Sunday when the Jayco Herald Sun Tour rides into town. Latrobe City Council is urging the community to join in the festivities as the ‘Go for your life’ tour village takes over town. By Latrobe City - 10th October 2008 - Back to News Support races begin at 8am, with village activities designed to entertain the whole family taking place between 9am and 5pm.
Latrobe City mayor, Councillor Bruce Lougheed, said that the village would be the entertainment hub for the two days of the well-known bicycle race.
"Traralgon is one of only three all-day villages on the tour this year and as such will feature a host of exciting activities for people to enjoy on both the Sunday and the Monday. There will be music from the Latrobe City Youth Band and the City of Traralgon Band. The Regenerators, a roving theatrical group, will provide plenty of entertainment and if you feel like a boogie, the Latrobe Rockers will be on hand to demonstrate the art of rock and roll dancing.
"There will be plenty to occupy the whole family, with Volvo road safety activities and cycling skills plus other come and try opportunities, such as bocce. There will be a jumping castle to entertain the little ones and entries for the ‘Go for your life’ school banner competition will be on display along with ‘Go for your life’ giveaways and games.
"Bound to be popular, will be the Cycle Sports Victoria Simulator, a computerised cycling simulator, allowing users to test their own cycling prowess against the clock or someone else," Cr Lougheed said.
Cr Lougheed added that there would be plenty of displays to interest visitors.
"One of the most interesting displays will be the Jayco Herald Sun Tour history display, but other organisations involved will include the Gippsland Sports Academy, Latrobe City Cycling Club, CFA, Ulysses Motorcycle Club, the Amy Gillett Foundation and host town displays detailing information about the entire route of the tour this year," Cr Lougheed said.
"With a live screen showing the action, a bicycle expo and refreshments there is something for everyone.
"The action continues on Monday from 9am in the lead up to the start of stage one of the race. At 10.30 am the competing cyclists will be flagged off on their 130km ride across the Strzeleckis to Inverloch," Cr Lougheed said.
"This is a huge event for Latrobe City and we hope to show the organisers and the cyclists taking part in the Jayco Herald Sun Tour that as well as being competent hosts, we are generous and supportive fans.
"Many of the sport’s supporters will travel to our municipality to witness the spectacle of the criterium being raced around Traralgon on Sunday afternoon and the opening leg of the tour race. The economic impact for the two days of the event will no doubt be positive in retail, accommodation, leisure and tourism terms. As a community, it is important that we get together and enjoy the ride," Cr Lougheed concluded.
