Bass Coast secures $980,000 Federal funding for Ventnor Road shared path to enhance active transport

Bass Coast Shire Council welcomes $980,000 in funding from the federal government to design and construct a new shared path along Ventnor Road, enhancing active transport options for residents and visitors.
Ventnor Road shared path is among 19 projects funded under the Australian government's $21 million Active Transport Program, supporting Bass Coast's vision for connected and accessible infrastructure
Cowes-Ventnor road upgrade
The project will deliver a 2-kilometre-long, 2.5-metre-wide concrete shared path, linking Cowes and Ventnor. Once completed, this new connection will form part of a continuous 4.5-kilometre pathway, improving accessibility and encouraging more people to walk and cycle safely.
Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Rochelle Halstead, said the project will deliver significant benefits to the community. "This is a fantastic investment in Phillip Island's active transport network. Shared pathways like this not only provide safer connections between townships but also support healthier, more sustainable ways for people to get around."
"We know there is strong demand for better walking and cycling infrastructure in Bass Coast, and this funding will help us deliver a high-quality path that meets the needs of both locals and visitors," Cr Halstead said.
Active transport investment
The Ventnor Road shared path is one of 19 projects funded under the Australian government's new Active Transport Program, which is investing $21 million to improve bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure across Victoria.
This initiative aligns with Bass Coast Shire Council's Tracks and Trails Strategy and commitment to creating connected, accessible, and liveable communities by providing safe and inclusive transport options. Construction is expected to commence following the detailed design phase.
