Local Projects Tagged For Federal Money

Six projects across Bass Coast Shire will be funded as part of the Federal Government program to build local community infrastructure.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 24th December 2008 - Back to News

Bass Coast Shire Council received $599,000 under the Federal Government’s $300 million Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program (RLCIP) announced in November.

Council’s Infrastructure Director, Steve Piasente, said the projects had all previously been identified as part of Council’s capital works program.

"Council has nominated six projects across the municipality," Mr Piasente said.

"These include footpaths, upgrading part of our drainage network, rebuilding the toilet block at the Wonthaggi Rec Reserve and contributing to a Bass Coast Landcare solar power demonstration project.

"Some projects were identified under the 2008/09 capital works programs, but were not able to funded in the current financial year," explained Mr Piasente.

"Others were part of our long term capital works program and this additional funding means they have been brought forward.

"The solar power demonstration project comes directly from our Environment Sustainability Plan."

Bass Coast Shire Council will submit the list of projects to the Federal Government in January. The projects must be completed by 30 September 2009.

The $599,000 funding package represents only 6 per cent of Council’s capital works program.

"Obviously we do welcome the funding and we would like to see it continue," said Mr Piasente.

"We have consistently lobbied the government for extra funding, through organisations such as the Australian Local Government Association, the Municipal Association of Victoria and the Sea Change Task Force.

"An area like ours faces additional pressure due to growth. We also need funding to help manage the impact of tourism on our local infrastructure."

The Federal Government announced the RLCIP funding to help stimulate local economies. Council has considered this in the selection of projects.

"As well making sure projects are spread across the municipality, we have selected projects that involve different types of labour," said Mr Piasente.

"This will help increase economic activity. By ensuring the work is being carried out at different locations, the economic benefit will be spread across the community."
