Schools across Bass Coast Shire joined in the Australia’s Walk Safely to School Day on 18 May.

By Bass Coast - 22nd May 2012 - Back to News

Students came with Mums, Dads and other family members and it was great to see that six of our primary schools participated in Walk Safely to School day.

Bass Coast Shire Council Community Strengthening Manager, Antoinette Mitchell, said five of the schools also took up Council’s offer to host a healthy breakfast.

"Bass Valley, Cowes, Inverloch, San Remo, Newhaven and Powlett River Primary Schools all signed up to take part.

"Bass Valley did the ‘walk’ a little differently as they don’t really have students that are close enough to walk. They call the day ‘Walk at School Day’ and all children participate in a walk around the oval for up to 30 minutes. The walk took place after the breakfast which is linked with their regular breakfast club.

"The Mayor got involved in preparing breakfast and then went on the oval with the students," said Mrs Mitchell.

San Remo primary school students walked, rode and scooted their way to school and over 90 per cent of students took part.

"A quick quiz at a special "Walk Safely to School Day" assembly showed that students have received the message of the day - That starting the day off with exercise and a healthy breakfast helps you stay alert and healthy and is good for you," said Mrs Mitchell.

"After assembly it was off to the classroom where teachers prepared a breakfast of toast and fruit which was very well received."

Cowes Primary School also participated with 279 out of 437 (64 per cent) of their students walking along with many of their teachers before meeting in the gym for a healthy breakfast. Powlett River Primary School had more than 90 per cent of students walk to school, with many parents joining in.

"Like Bass Valley school, those who live too far away walked around the walking track before enjoying a healthy breakfast outside in the schools new marquee," explained Mrs Mitchell.

Newhaven Primary School students walked on 17 May, as they had other activities planned for the day. Inverloch Primary school will walk next week as they also had other activities booked for 18 May.

"All in all we were very pleased that there were lots of young people walking and understanding the message about a healthy way to start the day," said Mrs Mitchell.
