Bear Gully re-opens after being closed for 9 months without explanations
Danny O'Brien celebrates Bear Gully Campground reopening on December 22, 2023, after a nine-month closure. While pleased, he seeks explanations and assurances to prevent future closures, valuing its tourism impact.
The Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O'Brien is delighted to receive news that the much-loved Bear Gully Campground will reopen to the public this month after being closed since February. Mr O'Brien said Bear Gully Campground will reopen to the public from 22 December 2023, with online bookings open from 7 December.
O'Brien welcomes the campground's reopening but presses for reasons behind the nine-month closure and assurances against future occurrences
Campground reopening inquiry
Mr O'Brien said, "While I am still waiting for a formal response to my latest request for an explanation of the closure from the new Minister for Environment, I am pleased to see we have now got some action. I am sure there are many would-be tourists and locals alike who will be very happy to have their favourite Christmas camping spot back."
Mr O'Brien said while he is pleased to see the campground reopen to the public, he is still seeking answers on why the campground remained closed for nine months and assurances that this will not occur again.
"Bear Gully Campground is a very popular tourist destination that provides great benefit to Gippsland South's tourism economy. We need to know why it was closed for so long and what measures are being put in place to ensure this doesn't happen again," he said.
