The fencing demonstration is being held at Peter Fosters Tongio Gap property from 10:00am to 12:30pm. Signs will be posted on the Great Alpine Way on the Swifts Creek side of Omeo.

The farming communities in Gippsland and the North east have been requesting additional Wild Dog Exclusion fence design options that meet their particular geographic locations needs.

The fence type being demonstrated is a new design and consists of large diameter netting combined with an electric offset wire.

Neville Prince, a Waratah fencing expert will construct a section of the fence during the demonstration.

Wild dog exclusion fences are an invaluable tool in wild dog management, the effectiveness of which can be compromised by a number of factors such as poor line preparation, standard of construction, inappropriate maintenance regimes, weather, topography and power supply.

Some of these factors can be reduced significantly by selecting an appropriate ‘line’, maintaining quality construction controls, carrying out routine maintenance to reduce pressure on fences from vegetation and in some instances soil and rock movement.

The issue of continuous power supply can be difficult, especially in remote areas. The selection of the appropriate energiser and fault finding are critical is the success or failure of a fences ability to provide an effective long-term barrier to wild dogs.

The establishment of a number of demonstration fences in areas known to incur wild dog predation will assist the Department of Primary Industries, the Gippsland Wild Dog Management Group and the community to determine their suitability as an option for the future.

The effectiveness of this fence will be reviewed in 6 months at which time a second field day will be held.

A BBQ lunch will be provided at the conclusion of the day.

For further information on the day contact Vaughn Kingston, Regional Wild Dog Co ordinator on (03) 5152 0600.
