Massive Fun-Event Day For Whole Community On Sunday

As a warm up to the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games, which are now less than six months away, the community has been invited to participate in a massive day of events taking place this Sunday 20 November across the municipality.

The events, which are being presented by community and sporting groups under a banner of ‘Warming up for the Games’, will provide the community with numerous opportunities to try out sport and leisure activities, enjoy barbecues and take part in interactive family activities. The great news is that most of the activities are free.

Latrobe City’s Chief Executive Officer, Paul Buckley, said ‘Warming up for the Games’ is part of the Victorian Government’s Getting Involved program, helping communities make the most of the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games.

"Activities will be taking place in celebration across the whole of Victoria on Sunday. Here in Latrobe City, a number of community and sporting organisations have been working with Council to deliver a very exciting program of events. I hope citizens take advantage of these ‘Warm up for the Games’ opportunities to try something new, and as a result will have a bundle of fun doing it," Mr Buckley said.

Featured in the program of events, the Boolarra Bowls Club has invited the community to try the game of bowls. Tuition and bowls will be provided as well as the opportunity for a short competitive game concluding with a sausage sizzle at 12.30pm. Contact Derek James on 5169 6325.

Hazelwood Pondage is the venue for a fun filled event ‘Hazelwood Pondage Pursuit’ to be held in conjunction with the Latrobe Valley Yacht Club Open Day, with yacht rides, sausage sizzle, market stalls, musical entertainment and family interactive activities provided by ‘Awakening’. The Churchill Leisure Centre is inviting the community to come and try their gym facilities for free. An aerobics class will also be running free of charge from 2pm. The Centre will be open from 12 noon to 5pm. Contact Tara Donegan on 5122 2504.

All the best athletes from every centre across Gippsland will compete in the Gippsland Regional Titles at the Joe Carmody Athletics Track in Newborough. Visitor entry is free to watch our future stars in the making. Contact Robert Brand on 0418 345 750.

Gippsland Heritage Park will be abuzz with activities from days gone by; marbles, egg and spoon races and even horseshoe throwing, coinciding with an art exhibition being run by the Moe Art Group and interactive family activities provided by ‘Awakening’. Contact Michael Fozard on 5127 3082.

The Moe Newborough Sports Centre is offering free entry to the heated pool from 10am-1pm and the opportunity to participate in a free aqua aerobics session at 1.30pm. Contact Rachael Mayes on 5128 8331.

The Morwell Leisure Centre is also offering free pool entry from 12 noon-4pm and will offer a range of aquatic activities. Contact Sandra Ashford on 5128 5570.

The Morwell Croquet Club is providing a fun introduction to the game of croquet with a free sausage sizzle being provided over lunchtime. Contact Marion Harrison on 5122 1618.

The Italian Australian Bocce Club is also opening its doors to the public, to try the game of bocce. There will be club members on hand to offer assistance from 10am-2pm. Contact Mary Pagani on 0407 661460.

The Twin City Archers located in Toners Lane, Morwell, invite the community to visit their club and have a go at archery. Contact Merv

The Traralgon Small Bore Rifle Club, at the Eric Taylor Reserve, Shakespeare Street, Traralgon is opening its doors to those who would like to try rifle shooting. The first 100 visitors will be able to try the sport for free, after that a small charge for rounds will be charged. Contact Ross Smith on 5174 0967.

The Traralgon Table Tennis Association is opening its Davidson Street, Traralgon doors to the public, with coaching on the finer points of the sport. Contact David North on 5174 6006.

Finally, but not least, Victory Park will be the venue for ‘Catchment Week’ where activities will include creek walks and a barbecue. Also catch the fun interactive family activities being provided by ‘Awakening’ between 12.30pm and 3pm.
