Croxon Ramsay architects appointed to design $30M community facility for Baw Baw Culture and Connection Precinct

A tender to develop detailed designs for the proposed Baw Baw Culture and Connection Precinct has been awarded by Council signalling another key step forward with the landmark project.

Melbourne-based architecture firm Croxon Ramsay will develop the detailed designs for the proposed $30 million community facility featuring a new library, art and culture space, community meeting rooms, a cafe, rooftop terrace and underground parking. Croxon Ramsay was appointed based on their extensive experience and success in designing various community hubs and library facilities across Victoria including the Ivanhoe Library & Cultural Hub, Hume Global Learning Centre and Aintree Community Centre.

Located in the heart of Warragul, Baw Baw's largest town, the precinct will provide vital social infrastructure to service our rapidly growing community for generations to come

State-of-the-art development

Baw Baw Shire Council unanimously awarded the $1.14 million contract at its 23 April meeting. The contract includes a review of the early concept design, schematic design, detailed construction documentation and development of internal and external 3D modelling. Designs will aim to maximise use of the building space with accessible and innovative features, while attaining the highest Green Star energy efficiency rating possible.

This state-of-the-art development will provide access to much needed community facilities designed to cater for all ages and abilities. There will be opportunities for the community to provide input and feedback throughout various stages of the design process to ensure the facility meets the community's vision.

The design process will progress the project to the stage of being truly 'shovel ready', with construction contingent on securing much needed state and federal government support to match the $10 million pledged by council, the largest investment in a single project in council's history. Council's advocacy efforts including grant applications and meetings with relevant Ministers and representatives at all levels of government are ramping up with both the state and federal government elections fast approaching on the horizon.

Architect-led facility designs

Mayor Cr Michael Leaney said, "This is an exciting step forward for this vital community facility. With an experienced architect-led design team at the helm, we know we're in great hands to deliver the best possible designs and plans for this multi-generational project. We look forward to the designs progressing and bringing the community along for the journey through future consultation opportunities."

Central Ward Cr Joe Gauci said, "Croxon Ramsay Pty Ltd has been producing great outcomes with similar style projects all throughout the State. They have worked closely with the local communities to produce the best outcomes they possibly can with the budgets that have been set.

Funding from external parties is critical for this project moving forward and the tender structure reflects this. With the state and federal elections coming up, let this be a motivator to the running candidates to show they care about infrastructure for this region and provide the funds for this community build."

Call to provide support

Central Ward Cr Jazmin Tauru said, "I am eager to see what Croxon Ramsay Pty Ltd comes up with during the design process as there is an opportunity to create something phenomenal. This will be a space that will contribute to positive mental, physical and spiritual wellbeing.

"A space for the community to unite, connect, inspire and support one another. I call on the state and federal government to act on this and provide their support on this very worthy investment that will have so much to offer." Ms Tauru said.

Central Ward Cr Danny Goss said, "This is a game-changing project for Baw Baw Shire and one that is crucially required for our growing region. The Culture and Connection Precinct, including the new community library and learning space will provide a range of benefits to everyone in our community."
