Community Consultation For Stormwater Management

New initiative to improve the environmental management of stormwater in Bass Coast

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 23rd July 2002 - Back to News

Bass Coast Shire Council, in partnership with EPA Victoria and West Gippsland Catchment Management Authority, has made a commitment to develop a Stormwater Management Plan. This initiative is to improve the environmental management of ‘urban’ stormwater throughout the Bass Coast region.

Cr John Gains, Mayor of Bass Coast Shire Council, explained that the goal of the Bass Coast Stormwater Management Plan is to improve the quality of Bass Coast’s water environment through better environmental management of urban stormwater.

"This will provide the community with the opportunity to enjoy the recreational and economic benefits of well-maintained waterways," he said.

The focus of the study is to consider the environmental values and the recreational uses of waterways. The main objective is to improve the quality of urban stormwater and associated community safety.

The primary focus of the plan will be the major urban centres of Wonthaggi, Inverloch and Cowes. However, it will also include the urban areas of San Remo, Newhaven, Cape Woolamai, Rhyll, Surf Beach, Smiths Beach, Ventor, Grantville, Corinella, Coronet Bay, Kilcunda, Bass, Daylston and Cape Paterson.

Earth Tech Consultants have been appointed to work in partnership with Council to develop the Stormwater Management Plan. The process includes consultation with the broader community to determine what receiving waters (rivers, streams, ocean etc) are considered to be of high priority and in need of protection from township urban stormwater discharge.

As part of this consultation with the broader community, Council has invited representatives from more than 70 local community groups, businesses and other organisations to take part in community workshops during August 2002. The workshops will be an opportunity for Council to obtain the input and views of the community.
