Victorian government invests $2.2M funding into fast-growing Baw Baw communities via Growing Suburbs Fund

The Andrews Labor government is continuing to support fast-growing communities across Cardinia Shire and the Yarra Ranges with the infrastructure they need.

Minister for Local Government Melissa Horne has announced the latest round of projects from the Labor government's $50 million Growing Suburbs Fund. The fund supports councils to build the community centres, town hubs, playgrounds, parks and reserves they need, with 47 successful projects across 15 local government areas to benefit from the investment.

This latest round of Growing Suburbs Funding will support communities across the state with new playgrounds, parks, community centres, pavilions and kindergartens

Investing in critical infrastructure

The government is investing $2.2 million towards two projects in the Baw Baw Shire. The Rollo Street Community Open Space project will receive $1.5 million towards developing the vacant Yarragon reserve into a public space with trees, parks, a play space, and paved pathways. 

The Queen Street, Warragul CBD Streetscape project will receive $673,962 towards revitalising Queen St between Normanby Place and Smith Street by improving sidewalks, relocating the existing toilet block, and creating more walkable spaces for pedestrians.

Over eight years the government has invested $425 million in critical infrastructure projects, supporting almost 350 projects and creating more than 11,300 jobs. 

Supporting fastest growing suburb

Councils supported by the government represent more than 31 percent of Victoria's population. For more than two decades, their population growth has exceeded Victoria's state average and that trend is expected to continue with around 900,000 additional residents forecast by 2036. This latest round of funding will support communities across the state with new playgrounds, parks, community centres, pavilions and kindergartens.

Member for Eastern Victoria Harriet Shing said, "These projects contribute further to our investment in the wellbeing of communities across West Gippsland, by bringing new life to our parks, pavilions, and reserves. They're also building on our record investment in West Gippsland since 2014."

Minister for Local Government Melissa Horne said, "We're supporting our fastest growing suburbs to thrive by investing in the community infrastructure that is needed. Over the last eight years we've been building a legacy by upgrading parks, playgrounds and libraries for Victoria's growing communities."
