Latrobe City Business Tourism Association formed

A second meeting of local and regional business tourism operators, held recently at the Century Inn, Traralgon has resulted in the formation of the Latrobe City Business Tourism Association.

By Latrobe City - 27th March 2007 - Back to News

Latrobe City deputy mayor, Councillor David Wilson said that the newly formed committee would enable Latrobe City tourism operators to benefit from a combined approach and may provide a springboard for future collaborations, joint initiatives and network partnerships.

"The network represents tourism in its many forms, not just catering for travellers on holiday, but also corporate tourism, conference tourism, visiting friends and relatives, and Latrobe’s strength - events. A cooperative network allows business operators to access activities that they may not otherwise have been able to do alone.

"The network may also undertake research, lobby government, encourage business development, or provide efficient, cost-effective marketing. As an established association, the group can also apply for and obtain funding through state and federal government for Latrobe City focussed tourism projects or marketing initiatives," Cr Wilson explained.

"The burden of administrative tasks is often the cause for networks failing to deliver objectives or disbanding altogether, so Latrobe City will provide a venue for meetings, as well as administrative support, leaving the committee free to look at its broader goals," Cr Wilson added.

Latrobe City’s tourism coordinator, Linda Brock said that the network had begun to establish itself with members from the Latrobe Valley, Walhalla, Pakenham and Mirboo North having met twice already.

"There may well be other operators who want to find out more about the objectives of the group, or to join. We would welcome any new members with an interest in business tourism, be it motel, event facility or other business with a keen interest in enhancing tourism and associated opportunities across Latrobe City," Ms Brock said.

"The meetings are an ideal way to meet other business tourism providers, to network and to hear guest speakers present on a variety of interesting topics. Facilitator at the first two meetings has been Tom Smith, board member of Tourism Victoria, Tourism Alliance and CEO Shipwreck Coast Tourism, who has been engaging members of the network with his wide-ranging knowledge of the tourism industry," Ms Brock said.

"We are pleased that these business tourism network meetings have resulted in the formation of this steering committee. This in effect means that the group can now move forward effectively, efficiently and with a united front," Ms Brock concluded.
