Council calls for Tidy Towns nominationsLatrobe’s communities have been invited by Latrobe City Council to nominate areas for the 2003 Tidy Towns competitions. By Latrobe City - 14th May 2003 - Back to News Closing date for submissions for this year’s program had been extended to 28 May 2003, with judging by the Tidy Towns Committee taking place from June through to the end of August, and regional awards scheduled for the last week of September.
Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Graeme Middlemiss, said that a number of awards will be presented in a number of categories and elements that recognised community mindedness and effort.
Categories include Victoria’s Tidiest Town award, Victoria’s Rural Proud City award, and Victoria’s Rural Proud Municipality award. There are also a number of other awards given for such elements as litter control prevention, outstanding beautification, resource management, and heritage preservation
Tidy Towns is the longest running community based environmental awards program in Australia, and last year over seventy-five communities around Victoria took part in the Victorian Tidy Towns program.
"Through Tidy Towns, the Keep Australia Beautiful Council Victoria (KABV) aims to increase pride and awareness of a town's community and to highlight the great environmental work undertaken by volunteers within rural Victoria," Cr Middlemiss said.
"The program recognises communities which do the best with what they have. Towns are not judged on their natural or financial resources, but on what contributions are made by the people who live and work within the local community.
"The awards program does not concentrate on the ‘tidiness’ of a town. The judge does look at a town’s general appearance, but also considers the level of community involvement and factors including positive litter control and prevention, beautification, heritage preservation, waste minimisation and recycling, and ongoing environmental projects," Cr Middlemiss explained.
Councillor Middlemiss said Latrobe City has taken out membership of the Keep Australia Beautiful Council, Victoria, to ensure all townships in the municipality are eligible to enter. "We now need representatives from our community to submit any entry in this year’s competition showcasing our muncipality’s achievements," Cr Middlemiss said.
"A project that your community could be working on right now or in the future could be in the running for a Keep Australia Beautiful Victoria award," Cr Middlemiss added.
