Bath seeks action on Bass Coast Health crisis

The Nationals' Melina Bath has urged the Allan Labor government to address the severe health crisis in Bass Coast. With rising ED visits and wait times, she criticises Labor for mismanagement and inadequate funding.

The Nationals' Member for Eastern Victoria Melina Bath has demanded the Allan Labor government address the "glaring health crisis in the Bass Coast region". Speaking in state parliament Ms Bath said the region needed resources and funding for its ailing health system. Presentations at the Bass Coast Health's Emergency Department (ED) have risen by 98 percent and wait times increased by 111 percent in the past five years and people presenting at the ED are waiting nearly one hour longer to be treated.

Health care crisis

Ms Bath said, "Residents inform me that access to primary health care is extremely difficult, and they are struggling to secure an appointment to see a doctor. When unwell, locals feel they have no option but to present to the Wonthaggi ED, rather than wait a week for an appointment. It's not surprising that ED presentations and wait times have doubled in recent years. Despite the best efforts of our dedicated doctors, nurses and allied health professionals, they cannot keep up with demand."

Ms Bath criticised Labor for its health sector mismanagement which has led to anxiety among locals about poorer patient outcomes. "Wonthaggi is one of the fastest growing communities in Victoria and is set to double in population over coming years."

"With the shadow of hospital mergers still on the horizon and no designated amount of funding for Bass Coast Health, Wonthaggi hospital - the Allan Labor government must work with local health services to reverse these alarming statistics. Labor can't manage regional health care, can't manage money and locals are paying the price," said Ms Bath.
