Inquiry Submissions Urged To Protect Community’S Growth

Business groups, organisations, community groups and individuals who have an interest in the Traralgon Bypass – Supplementary Inquiry, have been urged by Latrobe City Council to register

By Latrobe City Council - 9th February 2007 - Back to News

their intention to provide a submission to support the findings of the original Advisory Committee of 2004.

The Supplementary Inquiry will hold a hearing from 23 April 2007 for approximately 10 days; and those intending to make submissions to the Supplementary Inquiry need to complete and lodge a ‘request to be heard’ form with the Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) by Monday 12 February 2007.

Latrobe City’s chief executive officer, Paul Buckley, explained that parties came together two years ago and agreed on a proposed route for the Traralgon Bypass.

"The agreement was then scuttled by the Department of Primary Industries relying on ‘Latrobe 2100’ to alter the path of the agreed route to accommodate possible future coal exploitation."

Mr Buckley said considerable public concern over depriving the community of the bypass route and associated land, and consequently stifling growth in the Latrobe Valley had resulted in the Bracks Government agreeing to hold the Traralgon Bypass - Supplementary Inquiry in April.

"This inquiry will look into strategic land use matters including the proposed highway diversion, urban growth and coal resources between Traralgon and Morwell.

"Latrobe City Council sees retention of the route proposed for the Traralgon Bypass as an important strategic land issue and it is important for the community to send a clear and strong message to the Victorian Government through the inquiry that the 2004 decision on the bypass alignment needs to be reaffirmed. Our community can really only do this by making submissions and by lodging their intentions to make those submissions by this coming Monday," Mr Buckley added.

Request to be heard forms are available from DSE in Traralgon (DSE Gippsland Office, 71 Hotham Street, Traralgon) or from www.dse.vic.gov.au).
