Kerbside Waste Begins Rolling Into New Landfill

Waste from kerbside collections began rolling into the new Latrobe City Hyland Highway Landfill this week, following twelve months work at the Hyland Highway site.

By Latrobe City Council - 21st May 2009 - Back to News

The waste is being deposited in the first of a series of landfill cells to be constructed on the 18 hectare site.

Latrobe City mayor, Cr Lisa Price, said the utilisation of the facility signifies the end of what has been a complex three and a half year project.

"Securing long-term landfill airspace for the community’s waste has been a priority of council for some time and it’s fantastic to see the realisation of this project," Cr Price said.

In addition to the landfill cells and their associated infrastructure such as leachate and stormwater ponds, a 3.5 kilometre sealed access track from the Hyland Highway has been constructed, together with a gatehouse at the entrance of the facility flanked by two weighbridges to measure the waste entering the site.

Cr Lisa Price, said it’s important the community is aware that the Hyland Highway Landfill is not a transfer station, so there will be no public access.

"The landfill is for waste that is recovered from the weekly kerbside collection and for commercial operators," Cr Price said.

Cr Price said council was grateful for the support it has received from the Baw Baw Shire in recent times to accept all the waste collected by Latrobe City Council and commercial contractors working in Latrobe City.

"Baw Baw’s assistance has been extremely generous and strengthened relationships between the municipalities. Latrobe City Council is thankful for the regional approach that Baw Baw Shire has displayed," Cr Price said.

"We are also appreciative of the assistance we received from Loy Yang Power during the project. The construction of our access road is through the overburden works area which presents issues for site security, and our contractors were given access to water to moisture condition the landfill’s compacted clay liner. We were also able to use very good quality clays that overlie the coal at the Loy Yang mine. This allowed haulage by overland trucks and kept external traffic related to the project to a minimum.

"I’d also like to thank the Latrobe City Hyland Highway Landfill Consultative Committee which has monitored the development of the landfill cell construction," Cr Price said.
