Gippsland Water urges wise water use ahead of five-day heatwave to protect supply and infrastructure
Gippsland Water is urging customers to use water wisely during an upcoming five-day heatwave, with temperatures forecast between 30 - 40 degrees celsius. Shorter showers and delaying non-essential use can ease pressure.
Gippsland Water is reminding customers to use water wisely ahead of a five-day stretch of hot weather forecast from tomorrow. Temperatures are expected to reach between 30 and 40 degrees across the region from Saturday, February 1 to Wednesday, February 5.
Customers should have an alternate water source in their bushfire plan, as reticulated systems may lose pressure during emergencies. Gippsland Water will provide updates via text, website, and social media
Managing summer water
Demand on town water supply systems typically increases during hot weather, which can put pressure on water treatment and distribution infrastructure. While it's important to stay well-hydrated during hot weather, there are simple things customers can do to help balance demand:
- Put off non-essential water use such as watering gardens, pressure hosing and filling pools until off-peak times, between 9pm and 6am
- Take shorter showers for four minutes or less and reuse water where possible
- Report any leaks or main breaks as soon as possible to Gippsland Water on 1800 057 057
Customers are also being reminded to ensure they include an alternate water source in their bushfire plan. Reticulated water systems are not designed to manage the pressure of bushfire events and can experience low or no pressure due to damage or firefighting efforts.
If supplies are interrupted, Gippsland Water will aim to notify customers in several ways, including text message, their website, and social media. To find out more about heat waves, visit Gippsland Water website.
