By news@gippsland - 24th April 2025 - Back to News Life Saving Victoria (LSV) is urging all Victorians to take extra precautions around water during the upcoming long weekends and school holiday period, following alarming national figures and a deadly summer. In the past 20 years, 118 lives have been lost to drowning during the Easter period alone - a stark reminder that drowning rates double on public holidays. 
Royal Life Saving Australia's report reveals 104 drowning deaths this summer, a 14% increase, mostly at unpatrolled lakes, rivers, dams, and beaches Stay water safeCatherine Greaves, CEO of Life Saving Victoria said, "Over these long weekends, we're calling on all Victorians to stay alert and plan ahead when enjoying the water. Whether you're heading to the beach, camping near a river, or visiting a backyard pool, drownings can happen in seconds - and often in silence." The warning follows Royal Life Saving Australia's recent report revealing 104 drowning deaths nationally this summer, marking a 14% increase compared to previous years. The majority of these incidents occurred at unpatrolled locations with lakes, rivers, dams and private swimming pools being the most common sites. Approximately one third (32%) occurred at beaches and coastal settings. "Many families travel to regional areas over these long weekends where they may encounter unfamiliar and potentially dangerous waterways. Calm-looking rivers and lakes can hide strong currents, steep drop-offs, cold water and submerged hazards," Ms Greaves said. Prevent drowning togetherLSV is urging parents to maintain active supervision of children at all times, especially around inland waterways and home pools, and to designate a responsible adult whenever groups gather near water. Key water safety tips for long weekends and school holidays: - Actively supervise children at all times - don't be distracted
- Avoid alcohol when swimming, boating or supervising others
- Always wear a lifejacket when boating, fishing or kayaking
- Check the conditions - weather, tides and water hazards
- Swim at patrolled beaches between the red and yellow flags
- Never swim alone - always go with a friend or family member
- Know your limits - don't overestimate your swimming ability
"Drowning is preventable, and with a few simple steps we can all enjoy the water safely during these upcoming long weekends.
