Free Race Meeting To Launch Southern University Games Latrobe citizens are being treated to a free race meeting at Glenview Park Traralgon next Monday, to celebrate the opening of the 2005 Southern University Games. By Latrobe City Council - 1st July 2005 - Back to News Eight race events are scheduled at the meeting with the first race commencing at 12.05pm. Entry is free and gates open at 11.30am.
Latrobe City Mayor, Cr Bruce Lougheed, said the race meeting heralded the arrival of more than 2,000 competitors, officials and volunteers representing 16 Universities from Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania; who will converge on Latrobe City for four days of competition.
"The Latrobe Valley will be the hub of University sport next week when the Southern University Games commence on Monday," Cr Lougheed said.
"A highlight of the Games will no doubt be the opening ceremony on Monday. In a new initiative for the Southern University Games, the opening formalities will be held in conjunction with the race meeting to be held at Glenview Park Traralgon," Cr Lougheed said.
"Although there is an extensive social program for the Games in Latrobe City, the race meeting represents the only social event where members of the public will be able to mingle with the competitors. Other social venues can only be accessed by accredited competitors, officials and volunteers," Cr Lougheed explained.
"This being the case, Latrobe City is encouraging all members of the community to attend the meeting. As an incentive, entry to the meeting will be free with Latrobe City ‘shouting’ all members of the public into the course."
Cr Lougheed said that the University Games provided a great opportunity to increase race meetings at Glenview Park.
"Latrobe City has of course played a major role in facilitating discussions surrounding the future of Glenview Park. By bidding for and winning the rights to host the Southern University Games, we have created an opportunity to bring an extra race meeting to Traralgon. Along with the University students, we sincerely hope the people of Latrobe City will support the meeting," Cr Lougheed said.
The Southern University Games will be officially opened by the Member for Morwell, Brendan Jenkins MP. The State Government, through Tourism Victoria, will be a major sponsor of the event for all three years it is held in Latrobe City.
On conclusion of the race meeting and opening ceremony on Monday, the Southern University Games competition will officially kick off with the Men’s AFL football competition commencing with two night-games at the Traralgon Recreation Reserve.
Competitors in eleven other sports will then commence their competitions on Tuesday morning. They will compete in sports including football, soccer, table tennis, ultimate frisbee, badminton, volleyball, netball, basketball, baseball, softball, touch rugby and rugby.
Cr Lougheed said that while the Glenview Park race meeting was the only Southern University Games social event open to the public, spectators were more than welcome at all of the sporting functions being held over the four days, and entry to events would be free.
"Competitors love a crowd to cheer them on and encourage them in their efforts. Many of the competitors taking part next week are likely to be tomorrow’s Commonwealth and Olympic stars. As such there’s a wealth of top-class sporting talent being demonstrated over the four days for our community to enjoy," Cr Lougheed said.
Cr Lougheed acknowledged that a key factor in Latrobe City obtaining hosting rights for the Games was the municipality’s outstanding and diverse sporting facilities.
"To be able to host a sporting event in which there are 2,000 competitors, our sporting infrastructure was required to be substantial and of high quality. The final event program has now been released and it is pleasing to see that the majority of our best facilities in Morwell, Moe, Newborough, Churchill and Traralgon are all being utilised," Cr Lougheed said.
Cr Lougheed said he was also delighted about the obvious economic impact that the event will have on Latrobe City.
"The competitors will spend four nights in the region’s numerous accommodation venues. In addition, there will be an injection of business into local eateries and the accredited social venues will no doubt have a busy week. This signifies a huge boost for the accommodation and tourism industry," Cr Lougheed said.
Cr Lougheed added that the Southern University Games have been well supported by volunteers throughout the community with Latrobe City residents making up approximately 70 of the 100 volunteers required for the event.
"We have been overwhelmed by the level of local support, particularly in the area of volunteers. All of these people should be commended for their support of this important event for the region and we are extremely grateful for their assistance." Cr Lougheed concluded.
The Southern University Games will formally conclude on Thursday afternoon with a closing ceremony and medal presentation at the Moe Newborough Sports Centre.
